Day 11 Eureka to Newport

We left the hotel at 8:45 in a light mist with 50 degree temperatures, and headed up the coast. We encountered an elk herd on the side of the road, so we stopped for a few photos... Soon after we were back in the redwoods for another 5 miles of massive tree lined roads that we again chose as an opportunity for photos. Almost as soon as we crossed the Oregon line, we discovered expansive, surf filled, dark sand beaches, for as far as the eye could see. Mountains of driftwood, piled at the high tide line, marked one difference from the beaches in California. While California had more scenic roads along route one, the Oregon beaches were much more impressive. After stopping for gas 140 miles from Eureka, we ended up talking to Roger, who rode a Wee Strom (the 650cc version of Andy's bike) and had been trying to catch up with us since we began our day. He gave us advice on places to stay, which we ended up following to a T and which led us to the perfect place in Newport, Oregon, 320 miles north of Eureka. Our room in the Elizabeth Street Inn had the balcony with a view we had been waiting for the whole trip. From our room there were unobstructed views of ocean and beach on all sides, and we fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing.
